Things To Do & Places To Go

First of all sit down, have a cup of tea and relax.

Exploring:

There are local maps in the basket by the sofa

If your first venture out is to Appleby or Penrith, visit the Tourist Information Centres:

ApplebyAt Appleby....right in the centre of the main street within the Moot Hall,
PenrithAt Penrith....at the north end of town on main street beside the cinema.

The staff are really helpful and there are lots of information guides and 'whats on' calendars available.

Visit www.visiteden.co.uk for further information.

My favourite places to explore are:

Accommodation for 2Acorn Bank Temple Sowerby - National Trust herb garden and woods to explore. www.nationaltrust.org.uk
Accommodation for 2Lady Anne Clifford Trail - Start at Pendragon Castle in Mallerstang (south of Kirkby Stephen). www.visitcumbria.co/anneclif.htm
Accommodation for 2Ullswater Steamers - Start from Pooley Bridge. You can also hire a rowing boat or take a canoe trail around the lake. www.ullswater-steamers.co.uk
Accommodation for 2Settle to Carlisle Railway - Catch the train at Appleby and travel north and south on the most scenic railway in the north. www.settle-carlisle.co.uk
Accommodation for 2Blackwell House at Windermere - A perfect arts and crafts house with wonderful views of the lake. www.blackwell.org.uk
Accommodation for 2Drive down the Eden Valley from Appleby to Carlisle and then east towards Hadrian's wall. Follow all the small roads through villages that hug the Pennines.
Accommodation for 2Catch a Farmers market in lots of village locations each Saturday. www.madeincumbria.co.uk
Accommodation for 2Follow the Cumbria Church Trail and explore the many different styles of architecture of this area. www.carlislediocese.org.uk/support/tourism

Walking:

There are many walks from Maulds Meaburn as well as circular long and shorter walks from other villages. There are a few guides in the basket
You always need a map as some of the footpaths are not so well trodden, again Tourist Information Centres have lots of ideas and information.

Asking someone from the village for their opinion of local walks will usually give you a good route to follow.

Cycling:

Riding a bike on quiet rural roads and bridleway tracks is an ideal way to enjoy Eden’s magnificent scenery. The Eden Valley and Orton Fells are especially good for circular rides from places like Penrith, Appleby and Kirkby Stephen.
